  3. Grade Exams and Commitment:

    • Grade exams serve as milestones on your musical journey. They motivate and challenge you to excel.
    • Regular practice is essential. Parents play a vital role in encouraging and monitoring practice sessions at home.
    • Aim for a minimum of 20 minutes of practice, four times a week. As you progress to higher grades, dedicate more time to practice.
  4. Key Features of Each Grade:

    • Preliminary Grade:
      • Develop fundamental skills such as pitch, rhythm, controlled playing, and tone quality.
      • The exam includes tunes/exercises, a set piece or song, and an own-choice piece (approximately 16 to 24 bars). Simple aural tests are also part of this grade.
    • Grades 1 to 8:
      • Candidates select three pieces from the syllabus lists (Lists A, B, and C), showcasing their versatility across different styles.
      • Scales, broken chords, sight-reading, and aural tests complete the exam.
      • Total marks in practical exams amount to 150. Passing requires 100 marks, while 120 earns a merit and 130 secures a distinction.
  5. Balancing Exams and Musical Growth:

    • While exams are important, remember that they’re just one aspect of your musical education.
    • At the London School of Art, we prioritize building strong musical foundations. Rushing through exams isn’t our approach; we focus on holistic development.
